The cover for Jóhann Jóhannsson’s 12 Conversations with Thilo Heinzmann is one of the most radical in DG’s long history. Non-representational bursts of black pigment are scattered over a white background, with the album title and the names of the composer and performers printed in a subdued font along the bottom. The motifs formed by the pigment conjure a variety of associations: stardust, for example, or the Milky Way, particles of coal, ashes, etc. The story behind the cover, however, reveals how this album stands as a memorial, both to a friendship and to a united Europe under threat from Brexit.
